Fournier - Mi Primera Baraja Española

We collectors can be strange creatures. At times, we write off an item because of its origin, build quality, or its target audience. We frequently confine ourselves to specific niches, brushing aside options like souvenir decks or those meant for children. I myself am guilty of these biases, and I’d like to make amends—partially, at least—with this post, as we review one of these so-called children's decks. Down the line, I intend to feature more of these packs, as well as tourist decks and other releases typically seen as having little collectible value.

What we’re looking at today is a beautifully illustrated set, aptly named Mi Primera Baraja Española (My First Spanish Deck). It was released by Heraclio Fournier in 2015 and is currently discontinued. Designed by graphic artist Lina Vila, one of the title cards features her brand Stocklina stylized as stocklin^ⓐ. Curiously, upon digging a little deeper, I found she has abandoned that clever graphic touch, listing herself purely as Stocklina on her official website and social media platforms. Secondhand sellers frequently list this deck under 'stocklin'—likely a byproduct of that design choice—which might explain why she shifted to a cleaner, more straightforward branding.

The artwork reimagines the classic Castilian pattern by Fournier, streamlining its iconography while preserving the core identity, making it instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the original drawings. That being said, Vila has seamlessly woven her own signature style into the set, carrying a distinct flair that's easily spotted by anyone acquainted with her portfolio.

To make a brief descriptive walkthrough, we can highlight the absence of outlines, which, paired with a solid palette and sharp color transitions, lends a paper-cut collage aesthetic. The Coins and Cups pips display cheerful anthropomorphic faces looking at each other, while insects and other tiny creatures roam the edges of several cards. And last but not least, my favorites: the hobby horses on the Knights, replacing the traditional steeds.

Traditional inscriptions such as 'Calidad Superior' (Superior Quality) or 'Varios Premios' (Multiple Awards) have been replaced by playful, tongue-in-cheek slogans tailored for kids, giving the set an overall light and whimsical spirit.

A quick word on Heraclio Fournier’s execution: though high quality is to be expected from them, it deserves a mention nonetheless. Despite being aimed at a presumably less demanding audience, no corners were cut to reduce costs, and the finish is identical to other offerings in their lineup. Furthermore, the pack includes title cards introducing the deck, the artist, and her brand, plus eight double-sided cards with rules for traditional card games, specially chosen for kids and organized by age group. Details like these are precisely why I hold Fournier in such high esteem.

In the end, this is the best possible approach toward the consumer base. It’s no coincidence that LEGO is one of the top-selling toy brands in the world, or that anyone who had them as a child looks back on them with warmth and nostalgia. Even if we knew nothing about design, quality control, or manufacturing tolerances at that age, we intuitively pick up on—and remember—the products made by companies that truly took their craft seriously.
