Fournier - Nº 35
Made in Spain by Heraclio Fournier under reference No. 35, although it can also be found as No. 55 or No. 5, featuring the same illustrations but with different back designs and minor variations in the cards' finish.
This is one of the most widely distributed Spanish-suited decks by the brand today, alongside the iconic No. 1. Its designs originally belonged to Naipes Guarro in Barcelona, which was acquired by Fournier in 1930. I have found online examples of this deck already bearing the Fournier name with tax stamps from the 1931–1936 period, indicating that production resumed shortly after the acquisition.
A classic example of the Catalan pattern, featuring notable details such as the Barcelona coat of arms on the Ace of Swords and the Vitoria coat of arms on the 4 of Cups. The anchor on the 4 of Coins is also worth mentioning, being an element regularly seen in Catalan pattern sets.
The suits are clearly distinguished, with vivid yet mildly muted colors that provide a sober appearance. While it shares many similarities with other decks that share the pattern, this specific rendition showcases a highly refined and detailed style without falling into excess, resulting in an excellent aesthetic and functional balance.
The cards feature a matte finish that is pleasant to both touch and sight, contributing to good legibility and a smoother handling experience compared to the satin or glossy finishes used by other models and brands.
In Spain, it is usually sold wrapped in cellophane without a case. However, there are editions destined for other areas (such as Argentina) where the exact same deck is distributed in tuck cases, reflecting packaging differences depending on the target market.
