Mas Reynals - Ref. 201

A deck's appeal does not always lie in its historical significance or artistic prowess, and it is certainly not bound to its price. To prove it, today we take a look at this humble deck, which in recent years has become the undisputed "monarch of the corner shops" (at least in Spain). Though it comes from no centuries-old prestige maker and boasts no dazzling illustrations, it holds a few surprises for the viewer who knows where to look.

I have previously expressed my satisfaction with Mas Reynal (Varitemas/Suministros Jimasa). The deck featured in this post only reinforces that stance and, much like its sibling bearing the Catalan pattern, it offers a level of quality and design that I consider above its asking price. This is the model with reference 201, listed in the manufacturer's catalog as Baraja Española Clásica.

It's a Castilian pattern Spanish deck that, while reminiscent of the Fournier No. 1, maintains its own distinct identity with artwork no one could accuse of plagiarism. The court cards stand out, featuring highly expressive faces and interesting details, such as the helmets on the Knave and Knight of Batons.

A noteworthy feature is the rearing stance of the horses across all suits—a common trait in the Catalan pattern that departs from the Castilian tradition, where the steeds are typically depicted at rest as a defining characteristic.

The rest of the deck dwells within the boundaries of the Castilian pattern, and this is precisely what leads us to point out a rather quaint design choice. That standard dictates that all four Kings should be depicted carrying a sword—usually sheathed, with the King of Swords being the sole exception. Here, however, that rule was taken to a baffling extreme: the King of Coins wields a sword pointing downward, prominent enough to confuse players during gameplay. A revised version exists where the blade was clumsily deleted—though a careful examination reveals the hilt still in the King’s hand. Unfortunately, I don't have that variant in my collection.

The Aces feel somewhat understated and lacking in detail for a deck of this style. While perfectly acceptable, I would have liked to see more novel—or even wilder—ideas like those on the court cards. The Pip cards are likewise clean and straightforward, avoiding being dull or aesthetically unpleasing.

As is the case with other decks from this manufacturer, the retail price in Spain—around 2€, or sometimes even less—can be deceptive. While the overall quality isn’t a perfect 10, it comfortably earns a solid 8, featuring a flexible, durable-feeling cardstock with a surprisingly high-quality satin-laminated finish.

If I have one complaint, it’s the print quality. The linework on some cards exhibits jagged edges—aliasing—pointing to poorly prepared or low-resolution digital files. While it isn't glaringly obvious, it is visible to the naked eye upon close examination. Then again, I've seen similar flaws in pricier decks from far more reputable brands.

Be that as it may, I must emphasize how much I appreciate manufacturers who dare to innovate and break the mold. It is a rare thing to find someone willing to take a leap on experimental ideas—such as the court card designs in this deck, or the indices with miniature suit symbols integrated into their Catalan pattern offering. Such choices may not appeal to everyone, but the approach itself is undeniably correct. It is a breath of fresh air in a desert of formulaic, well-trodden designs repackaged thousands of times.
