Ducale - 40 Cartes Espagnoles
Today we're analyzing 40 Cartes Espagnoles, by the French manufacturer Ducale.
This post expands on the Grimaud's 104 - 48 Naypes Refinos review, serving as its first appendix. Since the artwork on both decks is virtually identical, and that previous entry already covers the history and significance of this Moroccan variant of the Spanish National pattern, a detailed comparison is unnecessary. Both releases offer equivalent quality, leaving little else to add.
The differences are few, starting with the most striking: the hues of yellow featured in them. It is noticeably more vibrant here, whereas Grimaud's deck features a muted, almost orange tone. Subtle variations are also visible on the 4 and Ace of Coins, as well as the 4 of Cups.
Ducale's offering consists of 40 cards compared to Grimaud’s 48, though a 48-card version by Ducale does exist—unfortunately missing from my collection.
Ducale's edition also features a matte finish that's much easier on the eyes, along with more flexible cardstock that makes it easier to shuffle and handle. These traits, combined with the chosen yellow hue, make it my preferred choice, even if both decks might appear nearly indistinguishable at first glance.
