Maestros Naiperos - Mod. 202 - Estilo Mediterráneo

Maestros Naiperos Españoles was a playing card manufacturer originally established in Valencia in the early 1990s. Today, the company is defunct—or rather, absorbed and diluted within the international giant Cartamundi. While a future post will dive deeper into their history and current status, this brief background serves as a necessary introduction.

Today, we’re looking at the brand's Mod. 202. Occasionally listed as Mod. 101, this deck appeared in the manufacturer's final available catalog (2014) as 'Estilo Mediterráneo' (Mediterranean Style), part of their Azahar line of Spanish-suited playing cards.

This 50-card deck features artwork by Victoria Contreras, a graphic artist who remains active today across several disciplines, including advertising and comics. This is no minor detail: we are dealing with a contemporary, entirely original piece of work, rather than yet another rehash or replica of designs created decades or centuries ago—a rare but highly welcome occurrence in this niche.

By 'contemporary,' I do not mean experimental. These cards remain unequivocally Spanish and instantly recognizable, yet their art style is on par with the illustrations found in modern Eurogames like Citadels or Hansa Teutonica. They feature vibrant colors, crisp linework, and a wealth of detail, all without ever feeling cluttered or 'baroque.'

While its roots lie in the Castilian pattern, the artwork leans heavily into a distinctive style that remains consistent across the manufacturer's entire Azahar line. The court cards appear inspired by stained glass, dominated by straight lines and sharp angles that give their poses a peculiar look. This stained-glass effect is further reinforced by a broad palette of hard-edged blocks of color, rather than soft, blended transitions. Nevertheless, subtle gradients and less abrupt chromatic shifts can still be spotted in certain areas, adding a layer of visual richness.

The faces on the court cards are highly detailed yet somewhat inexpressive. This is perhaps where the overall aesthetic structure falters the most, though it is fair to concede that this may simply be a matter of personal preference.

The rest of the deck follows the same design language as the courts regarding color and general look and feel. One design choice I find especially appealing is that the 2s through 9s across all suits appear as 'miniature' or slightly less detailed versions of the Aces, rather than featuring unique artwork for the Aces and overly simplified, schematic pips for the rest.

Overall, there is great internal cohesion, making for a very solid deck where everything fits perfectly in place.

The cards are made of 305 gsm cardstock, striking a good balance between flexibility and sturdiness. They feature a satin finish that provides a smooth glide and a pleasant feel—both to the touch and to the eye—although they fall short of decks from leading manufacturers. If I had to find a flaw in production quality, I could mention some inconsistencies in print resolution, which can appear more or less sharp depending on the card, especially on the Swords. However, this is a minor detail, noticeable only under close inspection or magnification.

Overall, this is a deck that punches well above its weight compared to anything you'll find outside major industry giants' offerings, which makes the brand’s ultimate demise feel like even more of a tragedy.
